A day in the life and home of a child in an informal settlement

Hello my name is Sami I live in Dunoon with my mom and my bother. My mom works at a spaza   and only earns R80 a day that is enough to buy bread, salad and milk. I woke up this morning and stepped into a big puddle of water I said to my mom it rained last night. When I opened my cupboard I was so furious to find that my clothes were sopping wet. My mom dried my clothes and I was on my way to school. As I walked up the street I saw all the houses all shatter to pieces by the storm last night. When I got to school I went to go play soccer with my friends the pitch was so wet. In my class there is only 1 teacher and 47 annoying kids it is a disaster for the teachers because all the children just chat all the time.

When our teacher told us to get a text book we all had to share a text book because there is only 15 text books. 1 hour before school the teacher had to evacuate because the building had been set on fire. I was panicking and scared that I would die but the fire saved the day and put out the fire.Whpen I got home my mom said please fill in this form the government want to know what the can do for us. I said to my mom I would put some solutions down on the government form.

Dear government I think we need fireproof house because most of our house are made out of rubbish and they catch alight very easily. My school would love to get more text book because we have a lot of children in our classroom. We also want better education for me and other children so more people can progress to university. Also I think we need electric for our house and stoves
